Your search for the perfect natural mascara is finally over. After using Couleur Caramel's mascara, you will never go back to your old, coal tar-packed version again. Better yet, it will stays put all day, without flaking or smudging (yes, it's true).

I have the Cils Longs and the mascara is fantastic but I wish the squeegy-thing cleaned the wand better. I feel I must wipe the globs off the base of the brush before use and I hate to waste so much product. -

This mascara delivers long voluminous lashes. the company has changed the packaging (it now has a bamboo picture on it making it look even more muesli) but they haven't fixed the tube. It means that still too much product comes out which needs to be wiped off otherwise you will end up with spider lashes! I also wish they would get rid of the formaldehyde-releasing preservative. So while it us a good product it needs some work! -

This really is a wonderful mascara. Not only the best natural one, but also one of the best mascaras I've tried. I use it with the Jane Iredale lash primer, and my lashes look amazing. They also look healthy when I take my makeup off. -

incredible! I've literally used every mascara out there. This one out-performs all others AND it's safe and natural. I'm hooked! -

I agree with the other reviews. this is the first natural mascara that really thickens and lengthens lashes with no difference to conventional products. There's also no smudging and it's alcohol-free, which is great.
However, the wand must be wiped off before using it, otherwise there's clumping, which is a bit of a waste.
I'm also concerned that they use sodium hydoxy methylglycinate as a preservative. The EWG as well as other watchdog groups, such as codecheck in switzerland, say that this preservative can release formaldehyde on the skin and is not recommended in products that remain on the skin. I had emailed the company a few years ago about my concerns and they said they are aware of it and working on an another formula, but they haven't changed it since.
Due to these two drawbacks I cannot give it an excellent rating. -

I really liked this mascara at first, and was so excited that it was natural and worked so well. I agree with the reviewer who said you had to wipe it off before using. Also, now that I have used it for a while I notice it flakes pretty badly. It didn't do that at first. I haven't had it three months yet, so I was very disappointed by that. -

Finally found a natural mascara that works for me! I luuuv it! This is the best mascara I have ever worn. It doesn't make my lashes stiff or brittle, doesn't smell and it makes my lashes look long and full. I bought the cils long in brown and I love the color and the brush. As others said, at first a lot of product gets on the brush, but nothing I haven't come across using other mascaras I just scrape it back into the tube until the golbs are gone. It is well worth the $! -

This is my favorite mascara!! It lasts all day long without flaking or smudging. I've had a few people, including my hair stylist, ask me if I was wearing false eyelashes. It adds volume to my eyelashes (I use the mascara for long eyelashes) and make my lashes look nice and full. -

This is the best mascara out there conventional or natural. I have tried many natural brands and this one is the best. I use the long lashes formula. -

I want to quickly address the formaldehyde/preservative issue. I think it's critically important to point out that mascara - more than any other makeup item - requires a good preservative system, due to the nature of application. There is a high potential for bacterial contamination with mascara (unless you use a disposable mascara wand every single time you use your mascara), and contaminated mascara can cause a host of eye infections, some potentially quite serious.
The preservative system in Couleur's mascara is going to comprise less than 1% of the entire formula. That means that even if it were to release formaldehyde, it would take massive amounts of mascara that would somehow end up on your skin or in your eyeballs, for it to even begin to cause problems. We're talking bottles and bottles of mascara directly applied to your eye balls instead of your lashes.
When it comes to skin care, I think the concerns are completely legitimate, given that the products are applied directly to the skin, and often on large areas of skin (e.g., body lotions). But with mascara, you want a bacteria-free bottle first and foremost. And Couleur Caramel, when formulating their mascara, found that sodium hydroxymethylglycinate was the safest of all options.
I hope this clarified the issue to some extent. In the end, we all have to make the choices that align best with our values. But I would recommend skipping mascara altogether (or getting a lash tint, perhaps) than to go with a mascara that doesn't have a broad-spectrum, effective preservative system. -

I think when it comes to natural mascara, a little flaking is to be expected.
As for the globs on the wand, the more often you push the wand back into the tube you are introducing more oxygen, which dries out the product, leading to more flakes. You are better off using the excess directly on your lashes and combing to distribute. A separate tool to rake off excess can be used.
All the reps I have spoken with prior to buying natural mascara for a natural foods store have recommended this method when removing wand: swirl the wand around the perimeter of tube while pulling it out, being careful to scrape the furrows on the rim. Trying to only double-dip (two applications max.) is the best recommended method to make your tube last longer.
And by the way, tubes have an average shelf life of two months. Anything longer, and you should expect its quality to rapidly decline. Just saying, Shelley.
