"...from the desires of those villagers in Arghandab, the idea of Arghand was born: an effort to add value to Kandahar's legendary fruit crops, to transform them into something stable and light, suitable for export. Even the name, Arghand, comes from Arghandab, that leafy district. "Arghand," in Persian, means "triumphant" or "conquering," and "ob" means "water." The district is named for its river, and we adopted the first part of its name..."

We are thrilled to offer to you Arghand Soaps, hand-made in Afghanistan by a co-op of farmers working with former NPR journalist Sarah Chayes. In 1995, after going to southern Afghanistan to report on the war, Chayes decided to remain in the country to help the people rebuild their community. She knew that the land was good for more than growing opium, and that Afghanistan would never free itself from instability unless it could find a new export. So she began working with a handful of brave men and women, seizing on the increasing demand for natural products by growing almonds, apricots, pomegranates, and the precious blossoms of Rosa damascena, and turning them into gorgeous, 100% natural soaps.  Recent research on the pomegranate fruit's anti-oxidant properties has confirmed local lore, which envies the pomegranate-growers of Arghandab their soft, wrinkle-free skin. We hope you love these soaps as much as we do, so that we can continue to support this amazing effort to rebuild a war-torn community.
